Camping adventures often create memorable moments, but sometimes nature offers more excitement than expected. Recently, we chatted with a Let's Go Aero customer whose GearDeck cargo carrier faced off against a determined 700 lb black bear in British Columbia—and survived unscathed!

Meet the Adventurer

Our adventurer, Ryan, is a dedicated dad, passionate camper, and road-trip enthusiast from Canada. Together with his family and their trusty 1987 Dodge B250 Getaway Van, Ryan frequently explores scenic spots and hidden gems across North America. Always prepared for adventure (and now even bears), Ryan knows firsthand how essential durable gear is to a successful camping trip.

On a recent trip to Canyon Hotspring in British Columbia, Ryan and his daughter experienced an unforgettable nighttime encounter. A determined 700 lb black bear attempted to access their food and gear stored in the GearDeck cargo carrier, putting the product's durability to the ultimate test.

Due to this crazy bear encounter, we asked Ryan a little bit more and got his permission to share this adventure with you:

What kind of vehicle do you have for your adventures?

"Our adventure-mobile is a classic 1987 Dodge B250 Getaway Van. It’s got a lot of character and has been the perfect companion for our family road trips."

Choosing the GearDeck

What made you originally choose the GearDeck for your camping adventures?

"When we first started looking for ways to expand our storage, I wanted something that would let us bring all the essentials without sacrificing access to the van’s rear storage. The GearDeck stood out because of its sliding feature—I love that I can just slide it back and still open the van doors without removing the whole box. The storage capacity is fantastic, making packing and unpacking so much easier. Before, our cooler and food bins were buried under gear, making every meal a bit of a production. Bear Encounter at Canyon Hotspring

You told us you encountered a 700 lbs black bear, how scary! Can you describe what happened during the bear attack?

"We were camping at Canyon Hotspring in British Columbia, and my 10-year-old daughter and I were sleeping in the van when we suddenly woke up to the whole van bouncing up and down, accompanied by loud crashing and thrashing. It was a 700 lb black bear doing his best to get into the GearDeck. Adrenaline definitely took over—I grabbed my flashlight and bear spray, and in my underwear, ran outside yelling to scare him off. In hindsight, I probably should have stayed inside, started the engine, and honked the horn—definitely the safer choice! Thankfully, the bear eventually moved on."

What do you typically store in your GearDeck, and what was inside during the bear encounter?

"We usually carry our large cooler, two food containers, dog food and gear, a refill hose for water, wet bathing suits from swimming stops, and sometimes shoes. At the time of the bear encounter, the GearDeck was loaded with our cooler, food bins, and all our usual road trip essentials."

Were you surprised at how well the GearDeck held up?

"Honestly, I’m amazed. The bear was pulling, bouncing, even climbing on top—and there wasn’t a scratch on the box itself. The only thing damaged was the mounting bracket and license plate light housing. That kind of durability gives me total confidence that the GearDeck will last a lifetime, no matter what nature throws at it."
